Child and Adolescent Behavioral Health Services

Since our inception in 1985, one of our primary goals has been to provide quality, affordable behavioral healthcare. Our emotional and behavioral counseling services for children and adolescents emphasize the use of clinical best practices in treatment to discover more effective ways of coping with difficult emotions.

Counseling and Therapy

Our team of caring and dedicated professionals are available to assist children and adolescents ages 17 and younger with emotional and behavior problems. We offer services for:

  • Attention Deficit/Hyperactivty Disorder
  • Anxiety
  • Anger and aggression management
  • Depression
  • Delinquency
  • Divorce and blended family adjustment
  • Family and peer conflicts
  • Oppositional and defiant behavior
  • School performance, behavior and social adjustment problems
  • Sexual and physical abuse
  • Suicidal feelings

Family Counseling

Problems with school, home and family situations can not only affect the children residing there but also the entire family. Carlsbad Mental Health Center understands that sometimes families need a little assistance with laying the groundwork for building a healthier, more functional relationship with their children and adolescents. Our family counseling and therapy seeks to provide that service and reopen the lines of communication and reduce any frustration within the family.

School Based Services

Treating the emotional and behavioral problems of teenagers, especially as they relate to family and school issues is a specialty of our staff. Individual and group counseling is available for students attending Carlsbad High School for alcohol and drug abuse as well as other emotional health issues. All services provided at the CHS School Health Clinic are completely confidential and we pledge to protect the integrity of all students who seek help for any emotional issue they may be facing.

Psychiatric Services

Through our innovative telepsychiatry program, our child and adolescent psychiatrist provides diagnostic evaluations, consultations for the school based health center and medication management.

Behavior Management Services

Behavior Management Services (BMS) focuses on intervention in the homes and schools of children in risk of hospitalization, removal from the home by CYFD or Juvenile Justice involvement, or a combination of those. The focus will be on maintaining the integrity of the family unit while enhancing the parenting skills of the parent and communication skills between members of the family.

BMS can begin before the child leaves for school, continue in school, and follow after school in the home, the classroom or the community. Family, individual therapeutic interventions and parenting training will occur in the home setting. Clients and their families also have access to other needed services from CMHC such as psychiatry.

Juvenile Community Corrections

Juvenile Community Corrections (JCC) is a non-residential treatment program that is a minimum 165 days, with a 365 day maximum. There are three phases of supervision in the program as well as a number of components:

  • Educational Development
  • Job Development
  • Community Service
  • Substance Abuse Monitoring
  • Individual/Family Counseling
  • Family Support Services
  • Life Skills
  • Electronic Monitoring

Life Skills courses are a main component of JCC. JCC staff as well as volunteers from the community present these sessions. Some examples of group topics are: Gang Intervention, Domestic Violence, Victim Impact, HIV/AIDS Awareness, Job Development, Parenting Skills, and Substance Abuse.

Multisystemic Therapy

Multisystemic Therapy (MST) is a family and community based treatment that addresses the multiple needs of serious juvenile offenders, who are at high risk for out-of-home placement, and their families. MST focuses on changing the known causes and risk factors for offending, including characteristics of the individual youth, the family, peer relations, school functioning, and the neighborhood.
